Hug a blogger
We’re all increasingly aware that being in a press office no longer means communicating merely with journalists. Nowadays there are all those pesky bloggers to form relationships with too. Well, turns out that they’re not so pesky after all – those PRs who have formed links with this new wave of media have enjoyed positive, influential coverage on forums, blogs and other social media platforms. And some of these new digital darlings have even become pukka journalists themselves as a result of their reputations in the blogosphere (step forward John Slavin and Sam Burnett as examples). So – how do you connect better with this new breed of communicator? This handy guide from PRMoment should give you some tips to get you off on the right foot… See: http://prmoment.com/1014/how-pr-people-can-make-friends-with-bloggers.aspx

Driving sustainable conversations
Last month Kantar Media, in association with MIPAA, held an intriguing seminar at the Museum of London on the topic of ‘Driving Sustainable Conversations’. Essentially, it discussed new media platforms in the context of the ever-increasing importance of environmental considerations and the need for companies to show that their activities are ‘sustainable’. Speakers including – other than, of course, the always-engaging Simon Hughes of Kantar, the editor-in-chief of What Car? Chas Hallett, Andy Turton from TNS and Henry Tucker from The Futures Company. If you weren’t there, you can check out all the slides via this handy link: http://www.kantarmediauk.com/media-monitoring–evaluation/evaluation/driving-sustainable-conversations/driving-sustainable-conversations.aspx

Pays-book
Top-dog social media site Facebook has started testing a ‘pay to promote’ option to see if users are willing to shell out to make their posts more prominent than others. The trial, which has taken place only in New Zealand so far, offers users the chance to push their updates higher up the priority list – a move that will appeal principally to businesses, it is predicted. Facebook is under pressure to increase its revenues in the run-up to its stock market flotation, and this could be one way to do it. But will this move the site even further away from its non-commercial origins – and as a consequence push users away? Tricky times for multi-billionaire Mr Zuckerberg (our hearts bleed…) See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18033259

Made for measure?
The big topic in PR right now is how to measure your success in a meaningful way beyond the traditional (and disputed) AVE figures. The jury is still out on what exactly should replace them, but this article on PR Daily sums it up nicely – make it relevant! It acknowledges that most PRs get into communications because they dislike working with numbers. Trouble is, their bosses live by numbers, and while the AVE system is flawed, it does at least make the MD feel good. But by judicious use of Google Analytics and other online tools, it is possible to show how specific campaigns have delivered specific increases in sales revenues and, hopefully, profits. Time to close Word and open Excel… More via: http://www.prdaily.com/Main/Articles/11626.aspx

The flagship annual Masterclass provided an opportunity for members to step away from their everyday pressures and take a strategic look ahead at bigger picture trends affecting motor industry PR.

The 2012 MIPAA PR Masterclass presents An Alternative Future – asking a range of experts for their insight and views into tomorrow’s world of motor industry PR.

Date: Thursday 21 June 2012 | Time: 0930-1630 | Venue: Ellen Terry Building, Coventry University | Cost: £75.00 per person (including VAT)

Full programme and details of speakers to be announced shortly.

——————————————————-

FEEDBACK FROM 2011 PR MASTERCLASS

The 70+ attendees at the 2011 PR Masterclass overwhelmingly endorsed the event with 100% of respondents recommending attendance and excellent comments including:

“Challenging and thought provoking.”

“It’s easy to think you’re too busy to lift your head and look around and learn – but beware that when you do the landscape has changed beyond recognition. Take time out to attend a Masterclass as a very minimum to keep up with your trade.”

“The core premise of our profession is undergoing a seismic change -the better we can understand that change, the better for MIPAA members.”

“The MIPAA Masterclasses are an excellent way of getting informed and authoritative insights into motor industry PR.”

“An insightful day and thought provoking – showing how things are changing and a good opportunity to meet other colleagues in the industry.”

“Provides a unique insight into the challenges and differentiators in action in the motor industry.”

“Insightful and thought provoking.”

“Opportunity to meet and hear the top people in the industry for a low outlay.”

2011 speakers included:
